Maylay shields are built for melee play. When their capacity is broken, they boost melee damage, encouraging aggressive close-range fighting instead of hiding behind a full shield.

To get the most out of them, you will often want to keep the shield down on purpose. That means planning around healing, damage reduction, or other ways to survive while taking hits.
